Getting Started with ByteyTasks
ByteyTasks is a free, privacy-first task manager and day planner designed with neurodivergent minds in mind. It features a 15-minute timeline view, a built-in Pomodoro timer, reminders, repeating events, and encrypted local storage — all in a single file that works in any browser with no account or internet connection required.
Yes, completely free. There is no subscription, no freemium tier, no adverts, and no hidden costs. ByteyTasks is a single HTML file you can download and open in any browser.
No account is needed. On first launch you set a PIN, which encrypts all your data locally. That's it — no email address, no password reset, no sign-up form.
ByteyTasks works in any modern browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on desktop, iPhone, iPad, and Android. For the best experience on mobile, add it to your home screen (see below) — it then opens full-screen like a native app.
On iPhone or iPad: open ByteyTasks in Safari, tap the Share button (the box with an arrow), scroll down and tap 'Add to Home Screen', then tap Add. On Android: open ByteyTasks in Chrome, tap the three-dot menu (⋮), tap 'Add to Home Screen', and confirm. ByteyTasks will appear as an app icon and open full-screen.
Security & Privacy — Your Encrypted Task Manager
All your tasks and settings are encrypted using AES-256-GCM, the same standard used by banks and governments. Your PIN is run through 120,000 rounds of PBKDF2 key derivation before it's used to encrypt anything — making brute-force attacks extremely slow. The encryption happens entirely in your browser; your data never leaves your device.
Your data is stored in your browser's local storage, on your device. It is never sent to a server, never stored in the cloud, and Bytey has no way to access it.
No. Your data is encrypted with a key derived from your PIN, and only you know your PIN. Even if someone obtained your browser's local storage, they would only see an encrypted blob that is meaningless without your PIN.
Your PIN cannot be recovered — this is by design, because storing a recovery mechanism would weaken the security model. If you forget your PIN, you will need to reset the app (clearing your browser's local storage) and start fresh. This is why we strongly recommend exporting an encrypted backup regularly from Settings.
Go to Settings → Data & Backup → Export Backup. This downloads an encrypted JSON file. Your backup is protected by the same encryption as the app — you'll need your PIN to restore it. To restore, open Settings → Import Backup and select the file. Backups work across devices as long as you use the same PIN.
ByteyTasks Features — Task Manager, Pomodoro Timer & More
ByteyTasks supports four item types: Tasks (simple checkbox items), Appointments (scheduled events with a start and end time), Checklists (multi-step items with individual checkboxes and a progress bar), and Notes (free-form text reminders). All types can be assigned a colour label, a scheduled time, a reminder, and set to repeat.
The day view shows a vertical schedule from 6 am to 11 pm, divided into 15-minute slots. Tap any empty slot to add an item at that time, or tap the + button to add an unscheduled item. Items with a start and end time appear as coloured blocks spanning their duration. Drag the ⠿ handle on any item to move it to a different time slot or back to the Unscheduled section.
The Pomodoro technique is a time-management method that breaks work into focused intervals — typically 25 minutes — separated by short breaks. Tap the 🍅 button (bottom-left) to open the timer. Choose Focus, Break, or Custom mode. Press Start, and a ring timer counts down. When it ends, it automatically switches mode. Custom mode lets you set any duration from 1 to 240 minutes. Focus time, break length, and custom durations are all adjustable in Settings.
Yes. When adding or editing any item, open the 🔔 Reminder section and toggle it on. Set the reminder time — it defaults to 15 minutes before the item's scheduled time if one is set. When the time arrives, an in-app notification card slides down with a gentle chime. Browser system notifications (shown even if the app is in the background) are also supported on HTTPS-hosted versions — enable them in Settings → Reminders & Notifications.
Yes. When adding or editing any item, open the 🔁 Repeat section. Toggle it on, select the days of the week you want the item to recur on (Mon through Sun), and set how many weeks the repeat should run (up to 52 weeks). When you save, ByteyTasks creates one instance of the item for each matching date. When deleting a repeating item, you can choose to delete just that occurrence or the entire series.
Yes. When adding an appointment or any timed item, set both a start time and an end time. The item will appear as a block spanning the full duration on the timeline, and the slots it covers will show a coloured continuation bar so you can see at a glance that time is taken.
ByteyTasks stores data locally on each device. To move data between devices, export a backup from Settings on your current device, transfer the file (via email, AirDrop, Google Drive, etc.), and import it in Settings on the new device using the same PIN. Both devices will then have the same data — but they don't sync automatically after that.
Neurodivergent & Accessibility
ByteyTasks was designed from the ground up for people who find conventional productivity apps overwhelming. Read our full ADHD planner guide for more detail on the design philosophy. It avoids cluttered dashboards, dark-pattern upsells, and notification spam. The interface is calm and consistent, uses warm colours with clear visual hierarchy, and provides concrete structure (the timeline) without being rigid. Features like the Pomodoro timer, unscheduled section, and colour labels are all aimed at reducing friction for people with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or executive function challenges.
Many of its features are particularly useful for ADHD: the Pomodoro timer helps manage hyperfocus and build in breaks; the timeline makes time feel concrete and predictable; reminders reduce the need to hold things in working memory; and the drag-and-drop rescheduling makes it easy to adjust when plans change. There is no punishing 'overdue' system — the app is designed to support you, not judge you.
The 15-minute timeline externalises time planning so you don't have to hold it in your head. Checklists break tasks into manageable steps. Colour labels provide quick visual categorisation. Reminders offload memory demands. The Pomodoro timer structures work sessions. And the unscheduled section gives a safe place to capture tasks without immediately having to place them — you can schedule them later by dragging.
ByteyTasks prioritises predictability and clarity. The interface is consistent — buttons always do what they look like they'll do, layouts don't shift unexpectedly, and settings stay where you put them. Themes let you choose a colour palette that feels comfortable to you. There are no pop-ups, ads, or unexpected interruptions beyond the reminders you set yourself.
